Art Gallery Sued in Auction Scheme

A New York art gallery has been sued in a class action lawsuit alleging that the gallery dealt in fraudulent artwork.

The lawsuit alleges that in 2002, that two of the plaintiffs purchased $25,000 in artwork from Park West Gallery. Six years later, the pair attempted to resell the art to other galleries, but had no takers. The class includes over 100 people and $5 million in damages. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that the gallery is involved in a conspiracy to auction “low-value, forged or worthless artwork” and provide “phony” appraisals to verify the value of the pieces.

In response, the gallery has filed a counter suit alleging that the plaintiffs have defamed the gallery with their allegations.
